I’ll be honest — I went in expecting a children’s book. Fairies, Pixie Hollow, a pretty cover? I had my doubts. I was so wrong.
Clarion is a fairy queen-in-training, nervously counting down the days to her coronation and not entirely sure she’s ready. When shadowy monsters begin threatening Pixie Hollow, she sees her chance to prove herself — only to find that the creature lurking at the edge of the Winter Woods isn’t a monster at all. It’s Milori, the quiet and wonderful Warden of the Winter Woods. Together they race to save everything they love, and somewhere along the way, fall completely and hopelessly in love. The problem? A warm-season fairy and a winter fairy are never supposed to be together. Ever.
I am not usually a YA reader. But something about this book hit differently. It was nostalgic in the best possible way — like revisiting a piece of your childhood and realizing it means even more now than it did then. The writing is beautiful, with lines that genuinely stopped me in my tracks and had tears in my eyes. It is gut-wrenching and sweet and epic all at once, and I felt every single emotion Saft put on those pages.
And here’s why it earns its spot on the Middle Shelf: It looks like a children’s book, but it absolutely is not. There’s real emotional depth here, a romance that will wreck you, and storytelling that respects its reader. No graphic content, no filler — just a genuinely beautiful story that happens to be set in Pixie Hollow. Clean, cozy, and not childish in the slightest.
