Though times are a bit monotonous right now, they don’t have to be dismal. What better way to pass the time than sitting down with the ones you love and watching a film?

Movie: “Tangled”

Description: A long-lost princess escapes from her tower to chase her dream only to discover her true identity and love along the way.

Reasons to watch: This is one of those films that I could watch every time it comes on TV. It never gets old because the storyline is original and beautifully developed. The movie is a perfect balance of funny and heartfelt with a hint of magic. The soundtrack makes you feel as though you are in the movie every time it is played. The songs give the movie an instant identity.

Where to watch: Disney Plus and Hulu

Movie: Harry Potter films

Description: A miserable boy finds out that he is a wizard and must adjust to his new life as he continually fights off an impending evil with the help of his new friends.

Reasons to watch: These films are a perfect marathon to watch if you are looking for a piece of childhood wonder. In each installment, the characters grow and the viewer has an opportunity to root for something good and struggle alongside them as they battle the bad. It’s a perfect series to watch with your muggle friends as you imagine yourself in Hogwarts eating all of the magical candy you can find. Not to mention a butterbear or two.

Where to watch: Cable: Syfy, Freeform, USA Network etc., or Amazon Prime (to rent)

Movie: “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”

Description: In this iconic film, director John Hughes creates the perfect day for anyone who has ever dreamed of skipping school. Three high school friends leave their marks on Chicago as their wild antics get them into exciting situations.

Reasons to watch: Ferris Bueller represents everything that everyone wanted to be in high school but because of good sense, never became. There is a little bit of Ferris in all of us. We all want to take risks, stick it to the man and enjoy life, but because of time and responsibility, that piece of us is suppressed. Everyone can relate to the main character in this film and the film’s popularity is the result. In the words of Ferris Bueller, “It is so choice.”

Where to Watch: Netflix

Movie: “Signs”

Description: After aliens invade Earth, a non-traditional family must do their best to survive in their rural farmhouse while facing their own struggles.

Reasons to Watch: If you like thriller/drama movies but don’t like to be scared out of your mind, this is the movie for you. This is one of my all time favorite movies because while it is suspenseful, the plot unfolds and works together to reveal an ending with a huge “aha” moment. There is a mysterious feel throughout as the characters interact, which leaves the viewer guessing.

Where to watch: Hulu

Movie: “Nacho Libre”

Description: Nacho follows his dream to become a wrestler so that he can impress his new love, Encarnación, and provide more for the orphanage where he works.

Reasons to watch: Writer and director Jared Hess, who also directed “Napoleon Dynamite,” delivers similar vibes in this film. This movie is unique in that it was made specifically for laughs. It’s a laid back watch full of random humor. I can simply enjoy the familiar antics of actor Jack Black and the scenarios in which he is placed. Though this is an acquired taste, I believe everyone should give it a try.

Where to watch: Netflix

Movie: Marvel movie marathon

Description: Nick Fury gathers together a team of capable superheros that grow in number over a period of 12 years in 23 movies.

Reasons to watch: What better time to catch up on the beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe than while homebound? These films are perfect for every age and cover many different genres. Though they are action movies at their core, the storyline is complex and branches out as each new movie is added. These are great for the whole family to watch and are a unifying tool to use to bring everyone together.

Where to watch: Disney Plus

Movie: “Back to the Future” trilogy

Description: Doc and Marty correct events from the future and past as they travel through time in Doc’s DeLorean time machine.

Reasons to watch: I love these movies because of their amusing and classic timelines. Past, present and future are explored and there is a sense of familiarity in each movie. As the viewer becomes familiar with the characters, their storylines are explored throughout each film and the same people play their family members in past and future settings.

Where to watch: “Back to the Future” – Amazon Prime (to rent)

“Back to the Future Ⅱ” – Amazon Prime (to rent)

“Back to the Future Ⅲ” – Netflix

Movie: “Monsters University”

Description: Mike and Sully meet at college and become unlikely friends when they join the not-so-cool Oozma Kappa fraternity.

Reasons to watch: Anyone can enjoy this comedic twist on college life especially if you have experienced college or dream of what it might be like. When Mike and Sully finally find their place with the unpopular group, they find out what true friendship really means. It’s fun to see familiar characters and how they started out. This is once again a great family film that will make you laugh and feel sentimental.

Where to watch: Disney Plus

Movie: “Night at the Museum” trilogy

Description: An ignorant night guard must learn all he can about the American Museum of Natural History as the museum’s occupants come to life every night.

Reasons to watch: These films are entertaining with an educational element. The idea behind the films is genius because who hasn’t imagined things in a museum coming to life? Isn’t that the point of a museum? I love how one’s curiosity comes to life in these films.

Where to watch: “Night at the Museum” – Hulu, Sling TV, Starz

“Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” – Amazon Prime

“Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” – Amazon Prime (to rent), Vudu (to rent)

Movie: “Major Payne”

Description: When Major Benson Winifred Payne is forced to take a break from the military, he becomes a Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps teacher to a group of untrained, prep-school boys. Major Payne’s instinct for killing makes him the toughest leader these boys have seen.

Reasons to watch: The main character’s insanity immediately pulls me into this movie. There’s no doubt that this is a comedy through-and-through; however, the ending and certain parts throughout does have some sentimental aspects.

Where to watch: Hulu (with STARZ add on)
